Julstro Self–Treatment Workshop
For Athletes and Fitness Trainers

If you are a serious athlete, or you train people who work–out for hours at a time, you realize that only a daily deep–muscle massage would help to ease tight muscles. As important as deep muscle therapy is to receive from a qualified massage therapist, it is even more important to learn how to treat yourself.

General exercise, weight training, long–distance running, cycling, and swimming, all develop strong muscles, but also cause repetitive strain injuries.  As the muscles contract repetitively, they eventually shorten. However, since they are still attached to "Point A" and "Point B", you feel pain at the insertion points. This causes a long list of joint pains that are common to athletes.  The seriousness of the tension is frequently overlooked and athletes just learn to live with the pain.

The major problem with this acceptance is the muscles will continue to shorten, and they can eventually pull so hard on the attachment that it will tear right off the bone! Most serious athletes know someone who has had a torn rotator cuff, a severed Achilles tendon, or ripped a bicep or hamstring. It is vital to learn why this is happening, and what you can do to prevent it before it occurs.

Julie Donnelly, a licensed massage therapist from New York, teaches you the "why" and "how" of self–care to prevent injuries.  Since 1989, Julie has specialized in treating chronic pain and sport injuries. The author of The Pain–Free Triathlete, Julie has a sense of body–mechanics that is unlike the vast majority of therapists and physicians. She uses the site of pain, and the limiting actions, to direct her to the source of the problem. Then she develops a self–treatment method to eliminate the ties that bind.

Julie tailors her presentation to your group´s needs and goals. She can:

  • Discuss the basics of muscle action in a one–hour presentation
  • Teach a two–hour workshop that explains how to self–treat major areas such as the knee, shoulder, and low back
  • Give a full three–hour interactive class with participants actually treating themselves*.
  • Continue the three–hour class to work with individuals who have specific problems that could prevent them from joining in the competition.
